Kelly :

 I’d like to welcome to the show our special guest,

 Congressman Tom Sakanoto.

Tom :

 Thank you for having me, Kelly.

Kelly :

 Congressman Sakamoto…

Tom :

 Please, call me Tom.

Kelly :

 Ok, Tom, you’re running for governor.

Tom :

 Yes, I know I surprised a lot of people with the announcement.

Kelly :

 You certainly did.

Tom :

 My worry was whether it was best to run for governor or not.

Kelly :

 Now, you say you’re against reducing taxes.

Tom :

 Well, the issue is if doing that will really help the economy.

Kelly :

 I see.

 

ケリー :

 本日の番組にお迎えしているゲストは、

 トム・サカモト下院議員です。

トム :

 お招きいただきありがとうございます、ケリー。

ケリー :

トム :

 どうぞ、トムと呼んでください。

ケリー :

 分かりました、トム、あなたは州知事に立候補していますね。

トム :

 はい、今回の発表で、多くの人たちを驚かせたことは承知しています。

ケリー :

 確かにびっくりさせられました。

トム :

 私が悩んでいたのは、州知事に立候補することが最善かどうかでした。

ケリー :

 さて、あなたは減税に反対と言っていますね。

トム :

 そうですね、問題は、そうすることが実際に経済に役立つかどうかなのです。

ケリー :

 なるほど。

 

 

=☆= 今日のフレーズと文法 Today’s Key Phrase and Target Forms =☆=

 

My worry was whether it was best to run for governor or not.

     私が心配だったのは、州知事に立候補することが最善かどうかでした。

 

 

説明型の説明語句としてif / whether節を使うときは、「~かどうか」を表す形。

どちらを使っても意味は変わらないが、whetherの方がかっちりと響く。

Ifは「もし~」と教養のため、いささか「緩い」響きになる。

 

また、この文のようにwhether ~ or notとすれば

「そうか、それともそうでないか」と「選択」のニュアンスが強調される。

be動詞の後ろに気軽にif / whether節を置く練習。

 

My issue is if this plan will work.

    私が懸念しているのは、この計画がうまくいくかどうかです。

The question is whether we have time.  問題は、私たちに時間があるかどうかです。

The problem is if Mom will say yes or not.  問題は、お母さんがハイというかどうかだよ。

説明語句にif / whether節を使った文を作ろう。

 

1)私が心配なのは、吸わす場所があるかどうかです。

      My worry is whether there’s a place to sit.

   一日中立っていたくはありません。

      I don’t want to stand all day.

2)問題は、私たちが解決策を持っているかどうかです。

      The question is if we have a solution.

   原因についてはあとから悩むことができますよ。

      We can worry about the cause later.

3)問題は、私のスーツケースがトランクの中に入るかどうかです。

      The problem is whether my suitcase will fit in the trunk or not.

   それは、かなりかさばります。

      It’s pretty bulky.
