　Yes, most people only think of cowboys when they think of Dallas.

　Right, some people do.　But most don’t.

　Hey, Shiho, this is the hospital where I was boen.

Shiho　：

　It’s really big.　And look at that sign over there.

　It says something about a piano competition.

Doug　：

　Dallas is famous for its imternational piano competition.

Shiho　：

　I didn’t know that.

Doug　：

　Well, 2013 is when it was started, so it’s fairly recent.

説明型の説明語句にはwh説も使うことができる。

wh節はwh疑問文と似ているが、疑問形を伴わない分の部品。

wh節とwh疑問文を明確に区別すること。

My worry was whether it was best to run for governor or not.

　　　　　私が心配だったのは、州知事に立候補することが最善かどうかでした。

 

 

説明型の説明語句としてif / whether節を使うときは、「～かどうか」を表す形。

どちらを使っても意味は変わらないが、whetherの方がかっちりと響く。

Ifは「もし～」と教養のため、いささか「緩い」響きになる。

 

また、この文のようにwhether ～ or notとすれば

「そうか、それともそうでないか」と「選択」のニュアンスが強調される。

be動詞の後ろに気軽にif / whether節を置く練習。

不定詞のtoは前置詞のtoと同じ「指し示す」、つまり矢印のイメージ。

このイメージがしばしば「これから」のニュアンスにつながる。
